Pacific Coast Highway

Pacific Coast Highway

In 1929, the Malibu leg of the Roosevelt Highway (later to be called Pacific Coast Highway) finally opened to the public after a years long legal battle between the state and May Rindge. In the late 1800’s May Knight married Frederick Rindge. The two purchased what is known as Malibu for $133,000, or just over $4 million dollars today for inflation. After Frederick died at 47 years old in 1905, many were trying to take the land away from May, and trying to build a public road through her property.  It was her life’s mission to preserve it and keep it as untouched and undeveloped as possible.
